A Sign in the Leaves
Birdin tea leaves

A message in motion, usually arriving from a distance and usually faster than expected.
Where the reading comes from
Birds are the most common recognisable shape in a teacup because wet leaves naturally form a body with two trailing edges. Every tea reading manual from the 1880s onward lists the bird first, and every one of them reads it as news carried rather than news made.
The favourable reading
A bird in flight means news travelling toward you now, often from another town or country. A pair of birds means a meeting, a reunion, or a partnership confirmed. Birds are read as the friendliest shape in the cup: even when the news itself is complicated, the bird says you will not hear it too late.
The warning reading
A bird at rest or facing downward means the message is stalled. Someone has written the letter and not sent it. A bird with scattered leaves across its body suggests news that arrives partial, or a rumour reaching you before the truth does.
Position in the cup
Rim: within days. Middle wall: within the month. Bottom: news about something long buried. Flying toward the handle: the news is for you. Flying away: you are the one who must send the message.
The full zone system is explained in the tea leaf reading guide.
How the coffee tradition reads it
Coffee reading agrees closely here, with one Ottoman refinement: in Turkish practice the bird's size matters, with a large bird meaning news of consequence and a small one meaning everyday word. Tea reading ignores size and reads direction instead.
