Kahve Falı
Kahve falı, literally coffee fortune, is one of the oldest continuous divinatory traditions in the world. For five hundred years, from Istanbul cafés to family kitchens across the former Ottoman world, the grounds left in a small porcelain cup have been read as a personal message.
The Ottoman origin
Coffee reached the Ottoman capital in the sixteenth century. Within a generation the cup after the coffee had become as important as the coffee itself. One person drank, another read, and the room listened. The practice is still alive in Istanbul, Athens, Beirut, and Cairo, and is spreading again as tasseography enjoys a modern revival.
The cezve
Turkish coffee is brewed in a small long-handled copper or brass pot called a cezve, also known as an ibrik. A heaping teaspoon of extra-finely ground coffee per demitasse goes in with cold water and, optionally, sugar. Heat slowly until the foam rises. Never boil.
The demitasse
Serve into a small porcelain cup with a handle. Pour foam and all. Sip slowly while holding your question. Leave a small pool at the bottom. The thickness of Turkish grounds is what makes the readings so vivid. They climb the walls and dry into sharper, more three-dimensional shapes than any other coffee.
The Falcı Ritual
- 01.Drink the coffee slowly while holding a clear question in mind.
- 02.When only a small amount of liquid remains, swirl the cup three times clockwise.
- 03.Cover the cup with the saucer and turn both upside-down in one motion.
- 04.Traditionally, place a coin or a ring on top of the inverted cup for luck.
- 05.Wait until the cup is cool to the touch. The grounds will run down the walls and dry into shapes.
- 06.Lift the cup carefully and read what has formed on the inner walls, then read the saucer as the resolution.
Reading the cup
The inside divides into four zones. The rim shows the near future, the middle the coming weeks and months, the bottom the deeper truths. The handle side is the person being read for. Opposite the handle stands for others. A heart near the rim on the handle side means love arriving soon and personally. The saucer as resolution
After the cup is read, the saucer is lifted. Marks left on the saucer are the resolution, what will remain once the events of the cup have passed. A clean saucer is a good sign.
